about
Mallet Phase is a re-orchestration of Steve Reich’s Piano Phase using instruments designed by Garry Kvistad. The first section of the piece is on wooden bars (tuned 2 x 4s patterned after the amadinda xylophone from Uganda) made from cherry wood and played with wood mallets; the second section is on tuned thick-walled aluminum tubes (similar to wind chime tubes); and the third section is on the wooden amadinda bars but played with yarn mallets. All of the instruments are tuned in just intonation.

Harmonies, moods, rhythms interplay and interlock on R/R. Further, Reich's composition accompanying Richter's visual components lift the mind out of its over sheltered habitat and immerses it into a realm of everpresence and divine longing. spicyinvalid
